Holding the keys to our new rental house, I walked into the empty front room, the slap from my sandals echoing down the hallway. Sunlight filtering through the window blinds created an eye-catching pattern on the tile floor, compelling me to sit in its warmth.
“Build your house on Me and I will protect it,” I sensed Him say. I smiled at His creative description as He whispered, “Let me show you how to activate a heavenly home security system.”
That day, the Spirit introduced me to the concept of a prayer walk, a powerful weapon in the fight to protect my home and family against the schemes of the enemy. He led me through each room, inviting me to pray for God’s protection.
As my fingertips traced the walls, I prayed His strong arms would hold them up amidst torrents of wind and rain. I hovered near each window, asking God to bind the enemy from slipping in and wreaking havoc. As I walked the floors, I prayed for the strength to make Jesus the solid foundation upon which I would create this new home.
Not only did I pray for a hedge of protection over the entire house, but I also asked God to bless the activity under its roof. I stood in each doorway and asked Jesus to help my family members keep the door to their hearts open.
In my son’s bedroom, I prayed he would find godly friends, and fulfill the purpose for his life. As I gazed around the master bedroom, I asked God to fan the flame of passion in my marriage.
As I took this first prayer walk, I sensed God activating His heavenly home security system. The experience was so profound I’ve made it a regular practice!
I also use my daily homemaking tasks as additional opportunities to cover my home in prayer. When I toss a bill on the office desk, I pray for my husband’s business pursuits and a willingness for us to be financially generous.
I believe that covering our homes in prayer is an integral part of protecting them against the prevailing evil in our world today. Let me share why.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO PRAY OVER OUR HOME?
We must be intentional about protecting our home and family. Sure, we can invest in high-tech security cameras and install extra deadbolts on our doors, but those man-made measures only go so far.
When we pray over our home, we seal in the peace of God and block out the world’s chaos.
Make no mistake that the devil is hell-bent on destroying our places of refuge. Here are a few practical ways to ensure your home is protected:
1) BUILD YOUR HOUSE ON SOLID GROUND
Whether you have been in your home for years, are building a house from the ground up, or renting a temporary space, God gives specific instruction on how to set our dwellings upon solid ground. It begins by following the teachings of our Savior.
Jesus reminds us that “anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock (Matthew 7: 24-25 NLT).
When we build on anything other than Jesus our Rock, the result is frightening: “But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against the house, it will collapse with a mighty crash” (vs. 26 NLT).
Another way to protect your home is to cultivate a prayer-walk practice. It’s as simple as it sounds: walk through your space in prayer, asking God’s direction, blessings, and protection over every room and everyone who resides there.
Prayer walks are a vital tool to bring God’s truth into your house, and an opportunity to repeatedly ask Him to be Lord of your home and your life.
Here are two options to consider as you practice prayer walks. One is to spend intentional time in each room, with focused prayer for protection and provision. Consider adding God’s word by creating scripture cards to help guide your prayers.
A few of my favorite scriptures are below:
Another option is more organic and less planned: as you clean and tidy your space, send up prayers of thanksgiving for hot water in which to bathe, a fridge full of food, and a comfy couch to snuggle upon. These prayers take seconds, and help you keep God as your focus throughout the day.
3) INVITE AND INSPIRE OTHERS TO HELP
Anyone living under your roof can help cover your home in prayer. Consider including your children, spouse, or roommate on your prayer walks, inviting them to pray for each member of your household and the activities that go on in each room.
To create an invitation to “pray unceasingly” for God’s protection, print out scripture cards and hang around your home as reminders. On the door leading to our garage, I have several verses to remind my family to pray for our home before we leave for the day.
As we make it a priority to cover our homes in prayer and follow God’s precepts to keep Him at the center of our daily routines and rhythms, we will experience a peaceful harbor of safety against the storms outside. We can rest safely knowing God’s heavenly home security system is actively protecting our dwelling.
With faith, hope & love,
